Platinum Ring Box Commission.

Designed using DeskArtes Design Expert software.

Commissioned by Stephen Roberts Jewellery.

1. Our client allowed us a free hand in the design of the box. We wanted to reflect the smooth, flowing lines of the platinum and diamond engagement ring, so a two-part design was decided on with a fluted base and  a smooth lid.

2. Both lid and base models were designed incorporating a hinge system so only a pin needed to be added during assembly. Exact dimensions were given to the models and a wall thickness of 1mm was specified throughout.

3. At this stage we created a virtual image of the box complete with ring, to show the client via e-mail and any alterations needed could then be discussed. In fact at any stage the client can view the models in 3-D and rotate them to view from any angle.
4. The CAD files were then converted into an STL format, this converts the surface of the models into a group of tiny triangles to enable the wax reproduction to take place. In this case the waxes were produced using Thermojet Rapid Prototyping process (basically, the machine builds up layers of wax on a bed to produce the model.) The waxes were then trimmed, sprued, invested and cast using the lost was casting process.

5. The platinum castings weighed 208gms in total and the finished box measured 44mm x 43mm x 44mm(h).
Trimming, polishing and assembly were carried out by our client. Diamonds and saphires were set into the lid.
