| 1. Question: What is the Exceed ? |
|---|
|
Answer: Exceed is an implementation of the X Window System for the Windows operating systems. X Window System is a client-server type graphical user environment, widely used on Unix platforms. It divides the graphical functionality of the programs into two different parts, that can be run on separate machines in a networked environment. In the X Window System terminology the module that does the actual drawing on the screen of a machine is called X server and the programs sending the drawing commands to the server are called X clients. |
| 2. Question: Why is the Exceed needed for the IDS on Windows platforms ? |
|---|
|
Answer: The DeskArtes IDS was originally designed and implemented for Unix platforms, where the X Window System is the most usual graphical user environment used. To be able to port the IDS to Windows platforms, without rewriting the whole graphical user interface, some kind of X Window System implementation for the Windows was needed. The Exceed was selected mainly because it supported also the OpenGL 3D graphics interface, used by the IDS too. The OpenGL support is however not included in the Exceed base installation package, but provided as a separate optional "3D Extensions" package. As IDS on Windows needs the OpenGL support, you have to also install this "3D Extensions" add-on. |
| 3. Question: How should I install the Exceed ? |
|---|
|
Answer: To install the Exceed for IDS on Windows, you have to run two separate setups: one for the Exceed base package and the other for the Exceed 3D Extensions. The setup.exe programs for these packages are found in the "Exceed" and "3D" subdirectories on the IDS for Windows installation media (CD). You should first run the setup for the Exceed base package and after that the setup for the Exceed 3D Extensions. In the Exceed setups you can normally use the default selections in the dialogs, except for the question: "Would you like to perform an installation that can be shared by all users...". There it is usually better to answer "Yes", because then also the other user accounts can use the same Exceed installation. The Exceed setups should be run before running the setup for the actual IDS system. If you are going to run the setup for the IDS after the Exceed setups, you don't have to restart the machine, when the Exceed installation suggests it. You can run all the three setups first and then only restart the machine once. |
| 4. Question: What versions of the Exceed can be used with the IDS on Windows platforms ? |
|---|
|
Answer: The IDS for Windows platforms works only with the Exceed version (5.1.3) included in the IDS installation media (CD). It cannot be used even with the newer versions of Exceed. |
| 5. Question: I have a newer version of Exceed already installed. Can I install the IDS on the same machine ? |
|---|
|
Answer: If you are using some other application that needs a newer version of Exceed, you cannot install the Exceed for the IDS on that same machine as an installation, that is shared by all user accounts. It is however possible to install two different versions of Exceed and two applications using them in the same machine, using two separate user accounts and the Exceed "Personal installation" type. You would then create first two user accounts, then install the two Exceed versions, one for each account, as "Personal installation" and finally install the applications under those accounts. The main problem with this configurations is that you have to logout, and login again with another account, every time you want to switch between the applications. So it is recommended that in this kind of Exceed version conflict situations the IDS is installed to another machine, if possible. |
