| 1. Question: How much free disk space is needed to install the IDS ? |
|---|
|
Answer: The full IDS system installation on Windows platforms needs about 250 MB of free disk space. In addition to this you need another 50 MB for the Exceed X emulator program, which is used by IDS on Windows platforms. These don't have to be installed on the same disk partition though. On Unix platforms you need about 150 MB of free disk space to install the full IDS system. The exact amount varies a little between the different Unix platforms. In addition to the disk space needed for the program installation you will also need some free disk space for the models you want to handle with the IDS. This space doesn't however have to be necessarily on the same disk partition where the program is installed. |
| 2. Question: What Windows versions are supported by the IDS ? |

| 3. Question: How is the IDS installed on Windows platforms ? |
|---|
|
Answer: The full IDS installation on the Windows platforms consists of three separate setup procedures. The first one installs the Exceed base system, the second one installs the 3D extensions for the Exceed and the third one installs the IDS system itself. The setup programs for the Exceed and 3D extensions are normally found inside corresponding "Exceed" and "3D" directories on the DeskArtes IDS installation media (CD). The setup program for the IDS is the one at the top level of the installation media. The installation process has the following steps:
If you have already installed the Exceed and its 3D extensions, running the third setup is enough to install the IDS. The installed Exceed version has to however be the same (5.1.3) that comes with the IDS distribution. The IDS 4.3 doesn't work with other Exceed versions. More detailed installation instructions are found in HTML format in "Installation" directory of the installation media (CD). Open the file "install.html" in your web- browser. The same document can also be viewed in the "Technical Support"-section of this web-site. Select first the "IDS / Rapid Tools" and then "Installation instructions for WinNT" under the title "Version 4.3". |
| 4. Question: How can I uninstall the IDS on Windows platforms ? |
|---|
|
Answer: The DeskArtes IDS should be uninstalled with the Windows program installation tool, which is found in the Control Panel of Windows: Start->Settings->Control Panel: Add/Remove programs The uninstall procedure can however remove only those files and directories created by the installation. If other files are later added under the installation directory, those have to be removed manually. The list of the files and directories, that the uninstall procedure couldn't remove, can be seen by pressing the "Details"-button in the result dialog of the uninstallation. The Exceed cannot be uninstalled with the Windows program installation tool. It has its own uninstallation procedure which is found in the "Exceed" program group in the Windows Start-menu. Start->Programs->Exceed->Uninstall This same uninstall procedure removes also the 3D extensions of the Exceed. |
| 5. Question: What Unix versions are supported by the IDS ? |
|---|
|
Answer: There is a version of the IDS 4.3 available for the following Unix platforms:
Currently there is no supported version of IDS available for Linux. |
| 6. Question: How is the IDS installed on Unix platforms ? | ||||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Answer: For the Unix platforms the DeskArtes IDS distribution is divided in four separate tar-packages. There is one base package for each platform and then three optional packages containing documents and example models for IDS and RT. The following steps are needed in the installation. In this example the full package is installed on the Irix5 and the "/cdrom" is the directory where the tar-packages are found.

| 7. Question: How can I uninstall the IDS on Unix platforms ? |
|---|
|
Answer: There is no automatic uninstall procedure available for the IDS on Unix platforms. The installation procedure however puts all the program components under the same directory, the home directory of the created da user account. So to uninstall the IDS you can just remove the contents of this directory and then remove the da user account from the system. Depending on the platform the user account can be removed using some system administration tool program, or then just editing the account definition line in /etc/passwd. |
