AM Expert – finding your AM process

DeskArtes has developed, together with Siemens AG and Aalto University, an automatic Additive Manufacturing (AM) process selection system for industrial end-use components. DeskArtes AM Expert™ system allows the users to find the most suitable AM process alternatives and related machines automatically based on technical requirements. With DeskArtes AM Expert you will always have the latest expert information on different AM systems and processes at your hands!

The AM Expert development is conducted within the EIT Digital OEDIPUS HII program during 2018 and 2019. The system is based on Siemens expertise on process automation and Aalto University AM process knowledge. DeskArtes has commercialized the AM Expert system and provides updates to the system and thedatabase.
The AM Expert system includes currently 129 professional AM machines with detailed information on each process. Material, dimensions, layer thickness and tensile strength information is at your disposal with a few keystrokes!
AM Expert is available as a separate module to DeskArtes 3Data Expert Base and 3Data Expert Free versions. DeskArtes is continuously looking for pilot customers and partners for AM Expert system testing and resales. Please contact DeskArtes if you want to know more about the AM Expert system.

AM Expert – the process flow for AM system selection

DeskArtes AM Expert is accessed via the AM Expert command in the DeskArtes 3Data Expert® Base or 3Data Expert Free software. When the command is invoked the user controlled parameter selection process is started. During the selection process AM Expert accesses a unique Knowledge Graph database including 129 professional AM systems to produce a list of AM systems suitable for you AM part requirements.
Step 1: Start the AM Expert command in 3Data Expert software via Print Manufacturing > AM Expert command.
Step 2: Select the materials suitable for your final AM part. Up to 19 different industrial material categories are currently available. You can select any number of materials suitable for your part from the list. The text on the right hand side indicates the number of machines supporting the selected material(s). The text on the bottom line shows the number of systems supporting all requirements set for the part (including material, part size, layer thickness and tensile strength). Press “Next” button to proceed to the next selection window.
Step 3: Input the dimensions of the part. Command will automatically exclude AM systems with too small work area.
If you have selected a component in 3Data Expert before starting the AM Expert command, the dimensions of the part are automatically transferred to dimension window. The text below to the diameter fields indicate the total number of systems capable to produce the part with the given dimensions.
The text on the bottom line shows the number of systems supporting all requirements set for the part (including material, part size, layer thickness and tensile strength).
Press “Next” button to proceed to the next selection window. If you wish to edit any previous selections you can press “Previous” button.
Step 4: Give the required layer thickness for the accuracy. This as any other requirement can be bypassed with “Ignore” selection.
The text below the slider indicates the number of systems capable to produce layer thickness equal or less than the given value. The smaller the layer thickness, the more accurate parts can be manufactured.
The text on the bottom line shows the number of systems supporting all requirements set for the part (including material, part size, layer thickness and tensile strength).
Press “Next” button to proceed to the next selection window. If you wish to edit any previous selections you can press “Previous” button.
Step 5: Give the tensile strength requirements. . This as any other requirement can be bypassed with “Ignore” selection.
The required tensile strength is set with the slider. The text immediately below the slider selection indicates the number of all system capable to produce a component with equal or smaller tensile strength.
The text on the bottom line shows the number of systems supporting all requirements set for the part (including material, part size, layer thickness and tensile strength).
Press “Next” button to proceed to the next selection window. If you wish to edit any previous selections you can press “Previous” button.
Step 6: Select the desired AM process technology from the drop down list. Or show all results by ticking on “Ignore”.
The text immediately below the drop down list shows the total number of processes available in the given process category.
The text on the bottom line shows the number of systems supporting all requirements set for the part (including material, part size, layer thickness and tensile strength).
If you wish to edit any previous selections you can press “Previous” button.
To see individual AM process descriptions in the selected category, press “Ready” button.
Display the result: A list of AM systems capable to produce your AM part is presented with detailed process information. Additionally, different post-processing requirements/ capabilities for different AM processes are reported.
You can browse different AM process possibilities with the “Previous” and “Next” buttons on top of the process description.
If you wish to edit any previous selections you can press “Previous” button.
The result shows detailed information on each available AM process:
  • Alternative = AM system name
  • Manufacturer = AM system manufacturer
  • Material type = selected material
  • Tensile strength in MPa for the selected process/material: values between 0 – 1 900 or -1 if not available in the data base
  • AM process category
  • AM Process technology
  • Layer thickness = available thickness interval for the AM system
  • AM Post process = available post processing technologies for the selected AM process

AM Expert – why?

The landscape for AM systems is changing rapidly, new machines, materials and processes are developed and brought to market almost monthly. It is difficult even for the most experienced AM professional to keep track on the new possibilities the AM industry offers.

The DeskArtes AM Expert database is constantly updated to include the latest AM systems, materials and processes, always giving up-to-date information for CAD designers, AM professionals and sales personnel. AM Expert will select your AM system automatically based on your requirements for the final part. AM Expert allows you to focus on your main professional tasks and to take the use of AM in the manufacturing industry a step forward!

AM Expert is available as annual single standalone license (1 network license), small business/educational license (10 network licenses) and corporate licenses (100 network licenses).
